Quayola celebrates the centenary of Archivio Luce, one of the most iconic audiovisual archive in the world, by drawing upon its boundless heritage, breathing new life into archival materials. He transforms archival photographs and videos into algorithmic paintings through a practice that hybridizes pictorial tradition with technological exploration.

In LUCE, the historical images of Archivio Luce transcend their time, acquiring a new algorithmic sensibility. The interpretation of the image is no longer driven by its iconographic, historical, or social meaning, but by its ‘pure form,’ which in Quayola’s work is translated through complex computational processes. Memories and emotions are foreign manifestations to the language of the machine; the algorithm enters the realm of uncertainty, error, and probability. The machine is compelled to grapple with human sentiment, confronting its ontological inability to comprehend emotions and human behaviors, generating a series of interpretative and cognitive errors. Thus emerges a ‘poetics of error’. The fallibility of the machine becomes manifest in contrast to its ideal of mechanical precision; its interpretative and discernment limitations become the ultimate object of Quayola’s aesthetic investigation.
